An excellent little narrative, Andrew.
My friend and I shall be doing the same trip in a week or two - let's see if the roads have deteriorated -- I'll be on a Kawasaki KLX 150 (so the suspension should smooth out some of the pot holes), although its slim seat will feel like a razor blade in my butt even before I reach Kuta, Lombok, I'm sure.
We hope to do the whole journey in less time, though; powerful extra headlights required, I guess.

Thus far, Myanmar's military dictatorship seems to allowing the monks to protest without fighting back. They even allowed access to Aung San. But I worry that if the protests gain momentum, and if the students and civil servants also get involved, we may see more bloodshed. The junta have a history of coming down hard on any opposition. Much like recent events in Tunisa and Egypt, social media seems to be playing an important role, despite censorship of sites like Facebook and Twitter. I hope others are also following this news as closely as you, events in Myanmar deserve wider scrutiny.
